Policy Advisory Committee nominated for an Inclusion Award!

Tile shows 5 people of different ages standing in a cafe. Text reads 'Congratulations! Policy Advisory Committee nominated!' with a photo of the ACT Inclusion Awards logo and the Women with Disabilities ACT Logo

WWDACT is thrilled to announce that our Policy Advisory Committee (PAC) has been nominated for a Chief Minister’s Inclusion Award – Excellence in Collaborating with people with Disability.

Over the past 3 years the PAC have been involved in all elements of WWDACT’s advocacy. The issues they have advocated on range from access to healthcare, voluntary assisted dying, sexual health and reproductive rights, inclusion of LGBTQIA+ Canberrans with disability, violence prevention, leadership, workplace rights and more.

Advocacy from the PAC has resulted in a push for the ACT Government to fund a Perinatal Mental Health Centre. The PAC have increased awareness around the reproductive rights of people with disabilities, including in the media. They also collaborated with other community organisations, for example collaborating with Women’s Health Matters on survey wording in Women’s Health Matters Survey of Women’s Health in the ACT, to ensure it includes the experiences of people with disabilities.

A special mention to PAC member Robyn Davis who has worked with WWDACT to design and implement ‘Silver Collage Club’ addressing isolation of older women with disabilities. Robyn has been nominated for a ‘Leader in Inclusion’ award for her work. PAC member Taryn Lee has also been nominated for a ‘Leader in Inclusion’ award for their leadership in the disability community.

Congratulations to the PAC for this recognition, and we look forward to celebrating their nomination at the inclusion awards on the 10th December.

  • Chronic Mischief Magazine Launch

    Chronic Mischief Magazine Launch

Last month we launched our inaugural issue of our member magazine, Chronic Mischief! Over 100 people turned up to Ainslie Arts Centre to celebrate with us, to check out the exhibition of artworks featured in the magazine, and hear presentations from our policy officer Pippa Newman, our Our Autonomy team leader Beatrice Tucker, and our CEO Kat Reed.

Chronic Mischief is a magazine for WWDACT’s members, by WWDACT members. Therefore, we want to extend a huge thank you to all the members who submitted their artwork & writing – this could not have happened without you.

This publication provides a space for people to have their works celebrated and stories told and heard. Discussion about us is often describe as a burden, boxed by diagnoses, and allocated to funding categories. This erases the depth of who we are, be that cheeky, sexual, staunch, hot, soft, gentle, asexual, daring, tenacious, or sometimes even well.
Through this magazine we celebrate our talents, experiences, fulfilling lives we lead and our passions. This magazine is where women, non-binary and gender diverse people get to share whatever we would like to share, as we see it.

Given the response to the magazine, we are now low on copies. That said, we are doing a second print run soon so nobody will miss out! It will also be up on our website in digital format shortly – watch this space.
