Message from the Chair

Dear Members and Friends,

WWDACT held its Annual General Meeting on Wednesday 22 November, and it is with great pleasure that we welcome two new members to our Board, Belinda O’Connor and Maree Pavloudis. This has brought our Board to its full complement of 7 members. You can read their bios and those of all the Board members and our staff at WWDACT. My thanks go to Carla Millner-Bradley, Clare Moore and Karen Findlay, who all had different roles in the event’s organisation and made it a successful, informative and enjoyable event.

On Monday, 3rd December, the WWDACT board and staff celebrated International Day of People with Disability by taking part in the inaugural National Disability Awards for Leadership. The usual Commonwealth Government celebration and award ceremony had been inexplicably cancelled this year. Thus, the new award ceremony was run by people with disabilities for people with disabilities through a live nationwide webcast, with presenters in about 8 different locations across the country. The Canberra gathering was hosted by the Australian Institute of Company Directors, and the WWDACT contingent was joined by representatives from ADACAS, PWDACT and National Ethnic Disability Alliance. For these awards the showcase of talent and leadership was phenomenal. Yes, there were a few technical glitches, but the bar has been set high for next year.

The ACT Government continues to support people with disabilities in celebrating I-Day, and the ACT Chief Minister’s Inclusion Awards gala event will be held on Thursday 6 December. The WWDACT Board and Staff look forward to greeting our friends and colleagues there. Unfortunately, I will be in Adelaide with my family to attend a Memorial Service for my aunt who died recently in Brisbane.

Regards,

Sue Salthouse
