Message from the Chair

Dear Members and Colleagues,

What a difficult month it has been. My thoughts are with all of our members who have been affected by the allegations of sexual assault in our national institutions, the ongoing public hearings by the Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability and the release of the final report of the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety. From the Australian Bureau of Statistics Personal Safety Survey we know that women with disabilities are more likely to experience harassment and assault than women without disabilities so I’m sure this news has been difficult for many of our members to hear. Please reach out if you need help – 24 hour support is available by calling 1800RESPECT the National Sexual Assault, Domestic Family Violence Counselling Service on 1800 737 732 or Lifeline on 131114. Online chat options are also available by going to chat.1800respect.org.au or lifeline.org.au

On a brighter note, WWDACT has begun our partnership with GenS Stories and PhotoAccess on Sue’s Legacy: a digital storytelling project. We are looking forward to bringing our stories about our Inaugural Chair, Sue Salthouse, to you.

Take care,

Kerry Marshall
Chair, WWDACT
