  • Submission to the Inquiry into Maternity Services in the ACT

    People with disabilities are increasingly exercising their right to become parents, and
    maternity services in the ACT need to ensure that models of care are appropriate to
    facilitate this. Current models of care are likely to be reactive to the medicalised
    disabilities presented to the health care professionals, rather than pro-active and
    collaborative with the mother. Current models of care must update to respect the
    authority of mothers in their own needs, reflect the diversity of disabilities, and include
    respectful support for parents with cognitive impairment to reduce the rates of child
    removal.

  • Submission on Development of a Service Delivery Plan for the University of Canberra Public Hospital

    Within the human rights context, and as articulated in the UN Convention on
    the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), the progressive right to the
    enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of health without discrimination
    on the basis of disability is fundamental to the design principles of the
    proposed University of Canberra Public Hospital (UCPH). Also fundamental to
    the design principles of the proposed UCPH is Article 6 of the CRPD which
    expressly calls on all Governments to take specific measures to ensure the full
    and equal enjoyment by women and girls with disabilities of all fundamental
    freedoms and human rights with men. Given the likelihood that a potentially
    higher proportion of women than men with disabilities in the ACT will need
    sub-acute hospital care, the design and operation of the UCPH is a gendered
    issue.

    Submission to Draft Charter of Rights for Mental Health Consumers

    The Charter, as it stands, is easily understandable and is set out in a logical format.
    Women With Disabilities ACT believes that this Charter will play a pivotal role in the
    lives of women with disabilities in the ACT.


    While the charter will be of benefit to all people in regards to mental health, it will be
    of particular relevance to women with disabilities in the territory because it will
    provide them with a navigation tool for self advocacy within the mental health system.
    Women with Disabilities ACT is currently working toward all women with disabilities
    within the ACT having the right tools, confidence and ability to self advocate in all
    forums in all ACT government and community sectors.
